Day Three - Okeechobee to Vero

Image
Lake Okeechobee The trip across Lake Okeechobee was uneventful. We did see some of the white pelicans that inhabit the area and countless alligators.   St. Lucie Canal and River We entered the St. Lucie Canal and started making our way back down to the east coast. There was only one lock and it was a lot smoother going down (note in the video we leaned to put the ropes through a cleat for better leverage). Most of the river was beautiful and desolate.                                    East Coast Craziness Things quickly changed after te St. Lucie Lock as we made our way east down the St. Lucie River. The topography changed to palm trees and sand and the homes and boats got bigger and bigger. The lonely canals of the Ockeechobee Waterway turned into the chaotic freeway of t...

Preparing for Departure

"No cars?!" We flew into Tampa Thursday night. There was a little hiccup with the rental car company that suddenly "ran out of cars" (zero stars for Executive Car Rentals at Tampa airport!). Thanks to Alamo we made it to Indian Rocks Beach and Pure Lunasea.   IRB We don't want to ruin a good thing (one of the Eagles songs says: "you call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye), but we have spent some time at Indian Rocks Beach during this adventure and it is really something special. It is so laid back and authentic. It's not for everyone, but if you want a charming walk-able town with good restaurants and void of high rise hotels, check out IRB. Provisioning Provisioning is a challenge. There are few places along our route to get groceries so you got to make sure you have all you need plus some extra in case the trip takes longer than expected. Hopefully we did alright. Itinerary and Weather Departure is tomorrow morning. The...

Our Story

Image
The Crew For those that don't know us, we are the Lathom's and we live in Annapolis, MD. We feel so blessed to live close to the Chesapeake Bay and we love to spend as much time as possible on the water. We started this blog to share our love of boating and to chronicle our adventure of buying a boat in Florida and bringing it back to Maryland. We hope you enjoy sharing our journey. Jim, Hannah, Caleb and Michelle Lathom Boat dog "Shiloh" "You're gonna need a bigger boat!" (Jaws 1975) After living aboard our 33' Bayliner flybridge in June 2018 we decided we wanted to spend even more time on the water and eventually live on a boat (fingers crossed). To do that we determined we needed a bigger boat. After much research we decided on a Silverton 34c with diesel engines. The problem was that very few Silverton 34c's were made with diesel engines. The Hunt We figured that it would take a couple of years to find ...
